First, every Gladiator comes with the Command-Trac part-time shift-on-the-fly 4x4 system - with the exception of the Rubicon which takes it up a step to the Rock-Track heavy-duty version. This feature delivers up to 100 percent of traction to a single wheel when necessary. Combined with Dana axles (M210 in the front and M220 in the back), you won't get stuck while rock crawling in this beast. Stabilizer bars, shock absorbers, and underbody skid plates are also standard on every trim.
Meanwhile, the Tacoma typically comes with RWD unless you opt for a specific model such as the TRD Off-Road. Nature-ready enhancements are not provided on every trim, and you can only find skid plates on the top-tier TRD Pro. In other words, the Gladiator is a much better choice from heading off the beaten path.
